In “My Last Duchess”, Browning writes of a different sort of iconography. The subject of the painting the narrator (the Duke) speaks of is that of his deceased wife. His monologue is a warning of sorts to the advisors of his soon to be wife’s father (the Count), although he is careful to admit no fault in his wife’s death.
For this discussion, let’s consider the power of the image. If the “Last Duchess” is not a beloved figure for the Duke, why should he keep the painting on the wall? How does this contrast to images of loved or even sacred figures like The Virgin of Vladimir? What does this contrast teach us about the universally social significance of the icon?
I’m not sure what you are asking.
However, Catholics keep images and statues of Christ and the saints as a reminder of those the images represent.
I keep a picture of my family in my wallet, and look at it often. Am I in love with the picture? No, I love those represented in the picture.
I don’t know if that is what you were looking for, but that is what I feel about Catholic imagery: It is not idolotry anymore than the picture in my wallet is idolotry.
